The Grandmaster is one of the most interesting films I’ve seen and defies categorization. It’s a martial arts movie that goes against many of the traditional fighting tropes and has long meditational sequences akin to 2046 and in the Mood for Love that makes it distinctive. The cinematography is breath-taking and beautiful and the fight sequences are amazing to wach. I’ll do a full review with my thoughts later, but here, I wanted to do a visual preview with some of the shots/images I found compelling. My friend Kyle Muntz pointed out the visual disintegration of the imagery in the movie, starting off with the more grand and beautiful designs, to the eventual poverty of the characters as their worlds fall apart. Some of that is here, but to really appreciate it, you really have to see it in motion. Make sure to check out Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster.
