I haven’t done a Favorite Game Level in a while now (mainly because I’ve been focused on writing deadlines). I finally decided to bust out a game and chose Rygar for the NES as it used to be one of my retro favorites. I loved the Metroidvania style gameplay as well as the ability to actually power Rygar up. I also loved the fantasy setting and the fact that relatively speaking, it was a pretty rare game that not many people had played. Back then, there were no FAQs or Youtube playthroughs, so the only way you knew you were making progress was visually seeing new areas. Up until the cave, all I’d seen were forests and mountains so I was thrilled at discovering this new area. At the same time, I remember feeling a sense of pressure and confusion as I wandered the maze, uncertain where to go. You can hear my riff on the Youtube link below.
