This was a joy to write as well as research. My favorite video game cutscenes, starting with Ninja Gaiden. Watching these brought back so many memories. The transition from 2D to 3D, remembering trying to figure out how the guys actually did some of the work in CG. In fact, in one of my very first demo reels, I tried to recreate some of the models from Final Fantasy 7!
On top of that, it did real well on N4G and it’s the hottest article, yay! It’s a nice thrill to see. I’ve been working on a couple short stories, mostly revisions right now for a few magazines, so was glad to take this break. Hope you enjoy it!
“Before Ninja Gaiden, I didn’t even know what a cutscene was. From the opening moment, I knew I was in for something special. Two ninjas faced-off against each other in a field with a full moon as the backdrop. They sprinted on their toes, eyes focused, taking a monstrous leap. Slash! One fell, one remained victorious. “With whom did father have a duel and lose?… For what reason did he fight and die?” Ryu, the main character, ponders. It was the beginning of his journey as he wielded the dragon sword into ninja brilliance. The fact that the music was midi perfection only helped confirm it as the best cutscene on the original Nintendo. ”
